Department: Chemistry Lab           Location: Kokomo, IN

Business Purpose:
To provide production support to the Chemistry Lab and development/validation of analytical instrumentation and processes. To operate instrumentation to cover the Lab on off hours, fill-in for vacations and beeper coverage as needed. To develop expert status on specific instrumentation leading to acceptable proficiency test results. Reports to the Manager of the Chemistry Lab on scale-up and support of instrumentation.

Role Qualifications: (Required) & (Preferred)

Education:
B.S. in Science with 2 years in a Laboratory environment (R) or a Master’s Degree in Science (P).

Experience: 
Two years of experience in a Laboratory Environment (R).

Areas of Knowledge:
Chemistry or similar lab experience (R); Working knowledge of wet chemistry methods; XRF, ICP, OES (P); Good chemistry techniques(R).

Skills:
Analytical chemistry( R); Technical Writing(R); Computer Programming(P); Scale-up of instrumentation (P); Excellent computer and communication skills(R); mathematical skills(R); First Aid/CPR/AED (P).

• Safety and Environmental: Support Corporate safety/environmental/ergonomic policies through proactive improvement efforts, PPE and personal responsibility for the safety of themselves and coworkers.
• Quality: Ensure that Quality is second only to Safety in decision making. Optimize processes, track data and effectively communicate problems immediately upon discovery. Work closely with Melt Shops and Technology to understand their needs.
• Productivity: Work in a very high functioning Manufacturing Laboratory Environment supporting Melting and Processing on a 24/7 basis. The Chemistry Specialist will share beeper coverage for weekends.
• Cost/Stewardship: Demonstrate cost stewardship in maintaining sophisticated instruments and using consumables. Develop low cost, efficient processes and eliminate any unnecessary testing.

1. Communication: Provide information to the Melt Shops, Manufacturing Engineering and Technology on all issues and concerns. Prepare a Monthly Report for Lab Services highlighting instrument performance data.
2. Technical: Learn the operation, programming, troubleshooting and scale-up of new instrumentation. Bring the equipment through validation by working closely with Technologist and Lead Chemist.
3. Manufacturing: Provide support by Operating instrumentation and by providing support for better practices. Document practice changes in SOP/QCI. Approved on sufficient processes/ instruments to handle beeper coverage.
4. Quality Systems: Review procedures to optimize the best practices and to ensure that the numbers generated by the Chemistry Lab are as accurate as possible. Evaluate consistency and accuracy through data analysis, round robin testing and by multiple instrument analysis as needed. Participate in preparation for all accreditation audits. Actively participate in audits.
5. Work directly with Lead Chemist, Technologist and Technicians on improvement projects.
