Our Positive Impact

It has been widely recognized that pollutants causing harmful greenhouse gases and global warming can be generated from transportation, energy production, and manufacturing.  There has been increasing emphasis placed on developing technologies to minimize the impact on the environment without sacrificing the needs for modern day life. Since our foundation in the early 1900’s, Haynes International has been a pioneer in innovation and development of alloys that enable newer technologies to minimize the impact on the environment. Our alloys are used in machines to increase efficiencies and reduce pollution in power generation, as well as enable chemicals to be safely produced that improve quality of life.

Haynes International has always been conscious of our environmental impact and are actively working to lighten our carbon footprint. The ever increasing demand for clean energy generation has led to the development of several emerging technologies that need high-temperature alloys for demanding operating conditions. Our highly recognizable high-performance HASTELLOY® and HAYNES® alloys are widely used in traditional power generation, aerospace, chemical processing, and several other industries. Our alloys are used in solar farms that generate clean energy and replace fossil fuels.

Aerospace

From the invention of HASTELLOY® X alloy in 1954, Haynes’ alloys have made it possible for aerospace engines to run at high temperatures for long periods of time. These newer engines reportedly consume 15% less fuel, produce 50% less pollutants, and reduce the noise footprint near airports compared to the previous generation of airplanes.  These improvements come from the increasing use of such as HASTELLOY® X, HAYNES® 188, 230®, 282®, 242®, 244® and other Haynes invented alloys.

Power Generation

When gas turbines replace typical coal-fired power generation, it is possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 65% and reduce both sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions by over 95%. In the newest turbines that use our alloys, more than 64% efficiency in combined cycle mode can be achieved, giving more power with much lower carbon dioxide and almost no sulfur and nitrogen oxide pollution.

For the next generation of environmentally friendly coal-fired power plants, we are working on several collaborative projects sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Our alloys such as HAYNES® 230® and 282® alloys are in the forefront of helping advance these technologies.

Chemical Processing

Besides the use of Haynes’ alloys for energy production and powering modern aircraft in an environmentally friendly manner, our alloys are also used in chemical plants that produce ecologically safe agrichemicals that help feed the world’s growing population. Haynes invented HASTELLOY® G-35®, HYBRID-BC1®, C-276 alloys are commonly used in these applications. For production of chemicals in the pharmaceutical industry, HASTELLOY® C-22®, C-2000® or B-3® alloy are used by the pharmaceutical companies for production of chemicals in the pharmaceutical industry.

Energy

We all want to breathe clean air. Technologies such as Flue-Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems have been developed to help scrub and clean the toxins formed while coal is burning and help keep our air clean. Haynes invented HASTELLOY® C-276, C-22®, and C-2000® alloys that are used in these FGD systems.

The emerging energy field encompasses three key power generation markets: fossil, renewables, and nuclear. In the fossil power generation market, HAYNES® alloys are being used or considered for advanced ultra-supercritical power plants, coal gasification, gas separation technologies, and use of supercritical-CO2 power cycles for energy generation.

For the next generation of environmentally friendly coal fired power plants, we are working on several collaborative projects sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Our alloys such as HAYNES® 230® and 282® alloys are in the forefront of helping advance these technologies.

Renewable technologies are, of course, the most desirable of all energy solutions.  Renewable power generation offers the promise of producing power from nature’s abundant resources, such as wind, sun, rivers and even from the oceans, without depleting the Earth’s resources or creating damage to the environment.

Many renewable energy technologies require the capture of energy at very high temperatures in extreme environments.  Haynes’ materials withstand the intense heat in concentrated solar power plants to give storable thermal power to generate electricity after the sun sets.

Many of the new renewable power generation technologies would not be possible without the innovative high temperatures in HAYNES® HR-160®, 230® and 282® alloys. These alloys used and considered for fuel cells, concentrated solar power, thermoacoustic engines, sterling engines, geothermal, waste fuels, and waste- and biomass-to-energy.

Our alloys are also used in the growing “Distributed Energy” marketplace, where smaller micro-turbines provide electricity, as well as hot water, heating and cooling at efficiencies up to 95%.

Health Care

Far less toxic than most other materials, our cobalt-base alloys have a long history of use for body implants. Back in the 1930s, the search was on for a material that would not react with the human body. It was found that our cobalt-base, low-iron, low-nickel alloys provided the strength, durability, and low toxicity needed. As a result, our alloys have been a fixture in this application for more than 90 years.

Waste Management

Land for municipal landfills has become a scarce resource. Some larger urban areas have chosen the municipal waste incineration alternative. In severe high-temperature environments like this, our alloys last longer and prevent the garbage from piling up. HAYNES® 556® and HR-160® alloys are among few materials that can withstand the corrosive environment and high temperatures inside waste incinerators. Another alloy that is used in waste incineration and wastewater treatment is HASTELLOY® C-22® alloy. This alloy also helps in the disposal of industrial, medical and nuclear waste.

Automobiles

Our alloys help modern-day automobiles improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption, which reduces pollution.  HAYNES® 282® alloy is used in high-performance turbochargers, HASTELLOY® X alloy, is used to control pollution and particulate emissions from diesel engines.

Our alloys significantly contribute to helping reduce pollution, making the jet engines and gas turbines run more efficiently, and producing of chemicals for ecologically safe agricultural products or for the common household medicines. Haynes International is committed to being a strong contributor to helping improve the quality of life for today’s generation and for generations to follow.
